How to Grow When You’re In a Spiritual Slump

How to Grow When You're In a Spiritual Slump

Every morning before work, I go to the gym. I challenge myself physically because I want to be stronger and healthier. When I know what I can handle in the gym, I’m more confident that I can handle other physical challenges. The time and effort is worth the results.

But sometimes when I go to the gym regularly, I still don’t see improvement. I keep trying to grow, but I can’t, because I’ve hit a plateau.

If we keep our physical routine the same, the challenge (which creates growth) fades—our bodies get used to the exercise. For me, sometimes these plateaus have lasted for years because I was unwilling to change my routine. I was experiencing the frustrations of physical maintenance—not the joys of physical growth.

Are you just doing “spiritual maintenance,” or are you actually growing spiritually?

It’s certainly important to know what experiences, techniques, and resources help you develop your faith the most, but if you’ve found yourself in a spiritual-growth plateau, it might be time to change things up. How long has it been since you changed your spiritual routine?

Don’t be content with spiritual maintenance.

Change your routine

There are lots of ways to grow spiritually—if you’re in a slump, it might be time to try something different. Find new ways to approach the Word and connect your life to Scripture. Bible study, prayer, worship, and the fruits of the spirit (Galatians 5:22–23) are some of your biggest “spiritual muscle groups.” If you want to grow spiritually, use them—and challenge yourself to use them in new ways.
